Why still life???
Most of the people in my studio class hate still life. It is definitely more technical, a lot of people prefer to illustrate images and ideas they have in their heads. I like to sketch ideas as well, but more and more, I was finding that I prefered to do still life drawings. A sense of peace and quietness comes over me while i grind colored pencils to make a photo realistic drawing.
I didn't want to accept this at first. I thought "wow I don't want to be a boring artist who likes to draw boring things!" I am a very spiritual person, and I wanted my art to reflect that. However, I somehow felt more in touch with myself spiritually when drawing realistically than when trying to represent myself through images in my mind.
I constantly question: Can I be a spiritual person without making spiritual art? I think the answer is yes. Maybe my soul is not reflected in beautiful, mystical paintings similar to the ones my classmates make. Maybe my soul is reflected in the process of me drawing in the moment, and the end product has nothing to do with the soul. Maybe?
